Collaborative for Education Organizing

Impact on Education Reform in the District of Columbia

Launched in spring 2007, CEO advances The Community Foundation's long-term goal of dramatically increasing opportunities for low-income children, youth, and adults to contribute to and benefit from our region's prosperity.  Working with the District of Columbia Public School Systems and District of Columbia Charter School students, our goal is to double the college-ready graduation rate.

At the core of this approach is our belief that systemic organizing of low-income youth and families is an essential part of influencing public and charter school programs, as well as policies that impact the academic and social development of children of color.  Organizing is defined as a resident led process to identify and analyze the issues that affect them.  Residents not only create a vision for positive change but lead the campaign to bring about this change.  Organizing is essential to ensuring that change are implemented and sustained.

CEO is a collaborative effort of The Community Foundation and a coalition of other local and national funders (HERE) dedicated to doubling the number of college ready graduates in The District.  To learn more about origins of CEO, go to The CEO Story to view a video providing first hand perspective from funders and nonprofit partners of CEO HERE or check out The Collaborative for Education Organizing: Building Excellence in Public Education a brief publication HERE.
