Montgomery County is the most populous county in Maryland and the home to some of our region’s oldest suburban neighborhoods. Montgomery County is a prosperous community marked by deep pride in the County’s civic institutions. It is also a community with an increasingly diverse jurisdiction, with significant numbers of newer arrivals alongside individuals and families who have lived in the County for generations.
Since 1995, The Community Foundation’s office in Montgomery County has worked closely with individuals, families, and businesses to match donor intent with community opportunity to create deeper local impact. We serve an important role in the County as a bridge between generous individuals, government and business organizations, and local nonprofit organizations.
+ Sharing Montgomery
Our staff organizes and directs Sharing Montgomery, a strategic, donor-led funding effort to encourage more residents and businesses to ‘give where they live.’ The Fund provides grants to nonprofits which directly serve low-income children, youth, adults, families, and/or seniors living in Montgomery County. Since its inception, the Sharing Montgomery Fund has distributed nearly $4.5 million for safety net, education, and workforce development programs. Contact us to learn more.
+ Children's Opportunity Fund
Funded jointly by the government of Montgomery County, Maryland, and Montgomery County Public Schools to leverage public funds to attract private investment, COF champions, plans and funds strategic investments that improve the lives of low-income children and families in the county. With a focus on innovative, evidence-informed efforts targeted at closing the opportunity gap, COF identifies priority areas for investment based on unmet need, aligns resources toward effective multi-sector collaborations serving the county’s most vulnerable youth and their families, and seeks new funding sources. + Neighbors in Need Montgomery
The Neighbors in Need Montgomery Fund was established in 2008 to respond to the economic crisis and its deep impact on our County’s residents. Given the rapidly growing demand for emergency services, the Fund initially supported critical direct services, including food, clothing, shelter, and emergency assistance for rent and utilities to help prevent evictions; and efforts to reach the most vulnerable and isolated populations, especially residents living in parts of the County with the highest poverty levels. Last year, the steering committee decided to focus dollars on both responding to the immediate needs while also investing in strategic solutions that would improve our safety-net system and help neighbors build pathways out of poverty.
